A year after the death of an an aide to the governor of New York by a stray bullet on J'ouvert festival, the police prepare precautionary measures to prevent the same thing happening again. Police plans to increase the number of surveillance cameras and the number of officers patrolling. A brochure is also distributed to the surrounding community with the message "This community will no longer tolerate this violence. Do not shoot anyone. Do not stab anyone." In 2015, Carey Gabay (43) a lawyer who worked for Governor Andrew Cuomo was shot in the head when two street gangs involved gunfire. From year to year the festival is often claimed casualties.
Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams held a press conference on Saturday for peace in the festival. "Our J'Ouvert is a peaceful J'Ouvert," said Adams. "Our West Indian Day weekend is a peaceful weekend."
J'ouvert Festival is a parade of the steel drum, but the party usually starts an hour earlier with eating and throwing paint. Mayor Bill de Blasio, a Democrat, said at a press conference last week. "It's something that we're going to a make sure is better than ever this year, safer than ever this year."
