Sandra Bland family have reached a settlement of $ 1.9 million in a wrongful death lawsuit. Bland was found dead in her cell after being arrested for not using turn signals in July 2015. The settlement also includes changes to prison procedures. Some changes to prison procedures included in the settlement are:
- Using automated electronic sensors to ensure timely cell checks
- Providing an on-duty staff nurse or emergency medical technician for all shifts
- Providing continuing education for jailer screening
According to the medical examiner and also the FBI, Bland died of suicide by clogging her respiratory tract using a plastic garbage bag. But the family refused it and said that Bland had been killed, apart from the absence of investigation to prove their allegations.
Booking papers issued by the Waller County Sheriff's Office show that at the time Bland put into prison, Bland claimed that she have tried to commit suicide. Bland were frustrated by his arrest, but prison officials did not notice any symptoms of suicide or mental disorder.
